Rock Master Festival - Arco

The Rock Master in the Italian town of Arco on Lake Garda is one of the most traditional and the oldest climbing competitions in the world. Here in the elite of climbing come together.

Due to the large number of athletes and the high quality competition, this climbing race is also considered an unofficial world climbing championship. The numerous climbers are housed in a special climbing village, which is also the centrepiece of the Rock Master. A varied daily programme of live music and shows takes place here. 

Competitions at the Rock Master
Climbing takes place in the large climbing stadium, which is about 200 meters away from the marketplace of Arco. The Rock Master climbs a total of 650 square metres. Moreover, the winners are determined in the different disciplines: difficulty level (Lead), bouldering and speed. Besides the world elite, children and youth from all over the world also contribute to the climbing competitions. For the Rock Master, the Rock Junior takes place in Arco, a climbing competition for children aged 5 to 13. 

The story of the Rock Master
In 1987, the Rock Master was first held in Arco. After the first time they climbed on natural rocks, the second time they climbed on an art climbing wall. In the first years only male and female winners were chosen in the so-called Lead competitions. In 1998 the first Boulder and Speed competitions were held at the Rock Master. The record holder of the Rock Master is the Spaniard Julien Puigblanque, who won the Lead competition five times between 2005 and 2010. Among the women, Lynn Hill from the USA is the most successful competitor so far with five victories.
